Start here when imports, sync, or unlocking fail

This page provides official support information for TokenGuard. If you run into issues with QR imports, backup recovery, iCloud sync, Apple Watch pairing, or unlocking the app, start with the guidance below.

Quick Start

Getting Started

Import tokens

Whenever possible, import tokens by scanning the otpauth QR code from your provider. If scanning is unavailable, you can manually enter the Base32 secret, code length, refresh period, and algorithm.

Protect your data

We recommend enabling Face ID, Touch ID, or device passcode protection and keeping background privacy shielding on so codes are not exposed in the app switcher.

Move to a new device

If you use the same Apple Account, you can enable iCloud sync. For migration across different accounts, export a password-protected encrypted backup first.

Common Issues

Troubleshooting

QR code cannot be imported

Make sure the QR code contains an otpauth://totp/... payload and that your provider supplied TOTP rather than HOTP. Also verify that the secret does not contain invalid Base32 characters.

Sync is unavailable

Confirm that your device is signed in to iCloud, the sync toggle is enabled, and the app's iCloud container is configured in the live environment. CloudKit schema availability can take a short time after first deployment.

Backup cannot be restored

Make sure you selected a backup file exported by TokenGuard and entered the original password used at export time. TokenGuard does not store that password and cannot recover it for you.

Apple Watch is not showing tokens

Make sure your iPhone and Apple Watch are paired correctly, the Watch extension is installed, and token data has finished syncing between phone and watch.

Sync password rejected, or sync won't restore

First check the exact message. “No sync password is set up” means you haven't created one yet — set one to start syncing. “Sync password incorrect” means a credential exists but doesn't match what you entered. If another device still shows your tokens, the easiest fix is to export an encrypted backup from it and import it on the new device, which bypasses sync entirely. If you've forgotten the password or your iCloud data was already wiped, open the app's Settings and use “Reset iCloud sync” to clear the old iCloud credential and synced data, then set a new sync password — tokens already on your device are kept. The sync password cannot be recovered, so keep an encrypted backup as a fallback.
